Don't worry - be happy

Well the summer is nearly over - the rain and cold has already seemed to return to Helensburgh. If that's not depressing enough then I'm sure the thought of returning to school soon might just be the final painful straw.
Hold On Hold on! what do I mean depressed? As Christians we should be the happiest people on earth - not only because of the hope that we have for eternity but also we should be experiencing the reality of God everyday in our normal lives - at home, at school, at our weekend jobs, when we wake up (early!), with our friends.
The Bible says that the Kingdom of God is 'righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit' (Romans 14:17).
We are righteous before God because Jesus took our place by dying for our wrongdoings, we can have peace becuase we should no longer fear death and in God's presence the Bible says that we can have complete joy.

Now I know this can be a hard thing to get, especially if we constantly find ourselves down in the dumps with no particular reason, and all the circumstances of our lives seem to want to strangle us and press on us. But I have come to realise that if you can learn to talk to God throughout the day, include Him in your decision making and ask His presence to be with you in a real way - then you will begin to experience some of that joy. Whenever you feel down in the dumps you should talk to Jesus about it, He is our greatest counsellor - more experienced than your best mate!
The Apostle Paul said that he has 'learned the secret of being happy at any time in everything that happens' (phillipians 4:12) and he was shipwrecked, went hungry quite a lot, was beaten and wrongfully imprisoned. Can you imagine what that would be like? There is obviously a secret to being happy at all times and Paul learnt it.

I think that part of the secret is to step back and take a good look at our lives and realise exactly what we do have to be grateful to God for. A heart of thankfulness will definitely enable you to experience God's presence more in your life, and with that will naturally come more joy and contentment.

So before you go back to School, remember the other people around the world who are currently caught up in wars, famines, poverty, wrongfully imprisoned and being oppressed and thank God for the life that you currently live - aim to be filled with God's peace and joy so that you can start the term on a good note. Your happiness will be infectious and should affect others around you and will set the direction that you will take over the course of the term.

You can be happy!!
